Minimally invasive surgical (MIS) approach is less invasive than traditional SI joint surgery. The iFuse procedure involves the insertion of three small, triangular, titanium implants across the SI joint, and is designed to stabilize and fuse the SI joint. This procedure is done through a small incision in the buttock and takes approximately one hour.

Once the procedure is complete, the amount of time the patient stays in the hospital depends on your overall health. In most cases, Physician Partners of America only performs outpatient procedures. Unlike most traditional procedures, this means the patient will be able to recover in the comfort of their own home. Some soreness may occur at the incision site.

After the procedure, the doctor might recommend the use crutches for about three weeks. Although the patient will most likely feel immediate relief, the crutches are necessary to make sure you heal properly. Post-procedure instructions will be received. These may include guidelines to ice the surgical site to reduce any swelling, to do certain exercises to keep up your strength, and to visit a physical therapist. Post-operative guidelines will be suited to your health and situation. For best results, follow the doctor’s advice.

At discharge, the follow-up visits will be arranged to assess your progress and health status. This is done to ensure the patient is on the most successful and beneficial track to recovery.

The doctor will advise the patient on when they are able to resume daily activities. Depending on how labor-intensive the patients work is depends on when they will be able to carry on with their occupation. If all goes as planned, the iFuse system is meant to be a long term fix and will most likely provide the patient relief of their chronic pain.
